Phone Won’t Charge: Safe Checks to Try First
Use these low-risk checks for charging problems before arranging a repair, and learn when to stop using a damaged charger or battery.
Charging issues can stem from a cable, adapter, outlet, debris, software or battery hardware. Stop if the device becomes unusually hot, swells or smells burnt.
Check the power source
Try a known-good compatible cable and adapter with a different outlet. Inspect the cable for damage and avoid using frayed accessories.
Inspect the port carefully
Look for visible debris or moisture, but do not insert metal tools or liquids. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions if a moisture warning appears.
Know when to stop
If the battery is swollen, the phone is very hot or there is a burning smell, disconnect power when safe and seek qualified repair. Do not puncture or press a swollen battery.
