IMEI vs Serial Number: What Is the Difference?
Understand what an IMEI and a device serial number identify, where to find them and when a service may request each one.
An IMEI and a serial number are different identifiers. Which one matters depends on the device, manufacturer and service you are using.
IMEI
IMEI is used to identify cellular equipment on supported mobile networks. A device with dual-SIM or eSIM capabilities may have more than one IMEI.
Serial number
A serial number is assigned by the manufacturer for device identification and support. Its format and use vary across manufacturers.
Share only what is needed
Use the identifier requested by the official service and avoid publishing either identifier unnecessarily. Neither identifier should be treated as a password.
