Used Phone Checklist: What to Check Before You Buy
Review device identity, activation locks, network compatibility, battery condition and seller documentation before buying a second-hand phone.
A careful inspection reduces the chance of buying a device with hidden problems. No single online report replaces checking the phone in person and confirming the seller has the right to sell it.
Inspect the physical device
Check the screen, cameras, charging port, speakers, buttons and signs of liquid damage. Test a call and mobile data with your own SIM where practical.
Check account and network status
Ask the seller to remove their account and disable any activation lock in front of you. Confirm the model, storage and IMEI match the device and available documentation.
Keep proof of purchase
Use a traceable payment method and obtain a receipt. Walk away if the seller cannot demonstrate legitimate ownership or pressures you to bypass a security lock.
